About Karl

Karl Backus, Creative Director

Karl has conceived, launched and increased brand value for a diverse list
of companies across many sectors. He creates solutions that significantly
increase consumer awareness and sales for BHT clients including, Cox
Business, Yahoo!, Chegg, and Datron World Communications.
Prior to BHT, Karl worked with J. Walter Thompson, where he served as Art
Director for the PG&E, Beaulieu Vineyard, Chevron, E-Style, and Coco’s
Restaurant accounts. At matthews/mark Karl was Art Director for the Union-
Tribune, Jabra, Siemens, Eastlake Communities and Nextec accounts. He cut
his teeth in New York – laying out car dealer ads at The Laurel Group.
Karl’s work on the San Diego Union-Tribune earned awards at the American
Advertising Federation’s ADDY ceremony. He also received a prestigious
One Show award for his work. Other awards include The Effies, The New York
International Advertising Festival, Cable Faxies, and a Deliver M.A.I.L. Award.
